Research Field: Website Analysis
Paper Topic: Christina Aguilare's Websites
Requirements: In this paper you will expand your analysis to a whole web site -- Does it have enough information? Is it accurate? Is it well organized? Do you like the pictures? Notice that before you only looked at a total of 4 "files" -- one file per article. Now you'll be looking at websites which contain many files (many articles). A
website is like someone putting together a whole magazine dedicated to one subject -- so don't just look at one file, browse through many files from the
website (by the way, websites are also called
web page or homepage).
Actual Paper:
When it comes to analyzing web documents, one should bear in mind that, while all conventional criteria apply here as they do to paper-and-pen writing, relevance and indeed emphasis is now not only spread among many more hallmarks, but is in fact shifted. Each web site
performs a dual function as a [complex] document and as a hypertext document. A website can be regarded as a set of
web-pages each representing a distinct section of the document and arrange so as to assure an utmost efficiency for the reader in terms of ease of info search, quality and reliability of information, exhaustive scope of coverage (unless its specific focus is implied by its index file/title page contents), or at any rate it must contain links referring the inquisitive reader to other such related sites.
As a hypertext document, it must provide for a reasonably easy and efficient switch between sections (individual pages)--whether it be download time or organization of hyperlinks. The latter tools may serve as standalone transfer points, thus highlighting individual sections or otherwise references, or they can be contextual transfer points, highlighting the key words or indeed some salient facts for the jaded reader not to wade in the blind through many sections from their beginning all the way down to the bottom in search for the facts he wants. In particular, such in-text hyperlinks reduce the complexity of a document otherwise organized by-section like a corporate database (intranet) or a library.
We have mentioned what could be referred to as "conventional" criteria applying to any documents intended for the broad and general audience. Clarity of style, efficacy of structure, and reliability and exhaustiveness of information presented all shape our
perception of the document's quality. However, the shift of emphases we were talking about earlier largely pertains to the site's design, in particular its aesthetic appeal. A site does capture a group of subdocuments (pages), but goes beyond that. A stack
of otherwise good pages may be arranged into a site with a better or lesser synergy. And how big this synergy is and how tasteful and professional the overall design appears really does help one (erroneously or reasonably) to judge on the site's substance.
Now, that primarily holds for commercial and otherwise non-NGO type sites for whom the credibility of their intrinsic value is unlikely to be compromised in mediocre image, as signaled through their sites in particular. For enthusiast or "non-profit" laden sites other criteria may be deemed more relevant. However, there must be some commonly shared properties that distinguish good and poor sites as such.
As would probably be expected of web sites devoted to a pop star, it's information and otherwise value differentiation that comes of higher interest than emotive/aesthetic appeal. We were looking for Christina
Aguilare sites "testable" with respect to the following 'parameters':
--information (how recent, news and announcements)
--design and presentation
--efficiency of the use of hypertext
--frequency of updates (or, time last updated)
The official Christina Aguilare site [http://www.christina-a.com]
captures pretty much every topic that a pop star fan would expect to see. Things like biography, discography/lyrics, photo gallery, chat forum and news are musts. However, there isn't really much beyond those necessities that are expected. That's exactly the point that, it's the unexpected extra content that contributes to value differentiation and keeps the fan from yawning. The bio section is really succinct if scanty and chiefly cover's the history of Chistina's star success. Just the history, without resorting to details, with success really defined by its commercial meaning (quantified in dates, number of albums released and CDs sold, etc.) The photo gallery is decent, though it might be a bit too conservative in scope as might any official announcements, statements, etc. After all, it's an official site, and it's not been around for a long time. On second thought, if only because it was launched recently, it should maintain as current a news and rumors section. The "Ask Shelly" section really can be located in the "updates" frame, but the last update dates to February 2 this year. In the bio page, Christina says that she does not measure success by those inherently commercial hallmarks, and would just like to keep sharing her thoughts and views with her audience. What the dedicated fan will likely fail to locate is any section highlighting Christina actually airing her views in her own words. Same, however, can be said of the rest of the sites I looked through.
The Christina Official Big Noise Page [http://www.bignoisenow.com/christina.html] is distinguished by a simple and not very 'loud' design. Unlike the previous site,
it does not represent a cartoon with lots of pictures blinking, jumping and flying around. Assessing the content, however, could be a bit tricky, as it cover a little bit o everything and not a lot in particular. Primarily, it's a small collection o rare specialties like new remixes, Spanish versions, live performances, etc.
Preplinks at http://www.preplinks.com/christina.htm features a rich collection of photos and provides all other info in an extremely compact form: as telling headlines.
Another site found on http://www.lbfmi.com/LinkLists/Christina_Aguilera/ claims to offer a comprehensive list of Christina links, and suggests an alternative document organization: it has sections such as information sites, discussion sites, commercial site, foreign sites, and miscellaneous. It thus presents a compact organization by offering all information in the form of references to sources (which is an extreme yet efficient version of the alternative we discussed at the very beginning: information that goes beyond the intended focus is provided by reference
hyperlinks) ...
